Daughters of History: Poetry

Daughters of History

They said,

History is overcrowded with women who were harmonies,

Cadencing with the delicacy of vulnerable melodies.

Your ancestors were crystal chandeliers and exquisite geodes,

Fragility dribbling from edges and nodes.

She camouflaged under the spiral of books,

Caging the brutality and inequality in the lines of a notebook.

She told, girls possess the cells of storm and bravery,

Undefined valour, immeasurable kindness was their geometry.

(Anne Frank)

Her vocal chords sang a tangible battle cry,

She wore an armour, lead armies unnoticing the societyā€™s eagle eye.

Believer of her own soul and her sword,

She said women were not only warriors, they were war.

(Joan of Arc)

Shot in a bus for educating herself,

For learning about the mirror image of the universe concealed in her cells.

She said courage is knitted in each thread of your veil,

Silence will not be the ship that will sail.

(Malala Yousafzai)

Spears and swords were her favourite games,

Annexed her kingdom and watch how mothers become flames,

Battled with her child on her back,

She taught us how women inhale fire until they draw their last breath.

(Queen of Jhansi)

We are the descendants of the women with ancient anger in our veins,

Drunk on mad-hatter ambitions in our brains.

We are the descendants of the women who had chaos in their bones,

Flames of wildfire dancing in the capillaries our souls.

We were born when mess and glory were entwined,

Weā€™re the girls of fire that will never entice.

Weā€™re the daughters of the women whom you shrine,

The daughters of the history that will never decline.

The daughters of the history that will never decline.

And what did they say? ~ Enigma

Note: In case you haven’t guessed, the second stanza glorifies the life of Anne Frank. The third stanza glorifies the life of Joan of Arc. The fourth stanza glorifies the life of Malala Yousafzai. The fifth stanza glorifies the life of the Queen of Jhansi. There are and have been a countless woman in the history of time who have bled for equality and a secure future. My heart is filled with love and respect for them.

Dedicated: To all the women out there! Happy Women’s Day! (in advance)
